Balyabane
The Name
Big Meadows, in Kodava
Balya means big. Bane means meadows. Together - Balyabane - the wide open clearings that sit between the coffee blocks, the forest, and the hills. It's the kind of name that tells you what to expect before you even arrive.
The Setting
A working coffee estate, off the map
Balyabane sits inside hundreds of acres of working coffee estate in Theralu - south Coorg, near the Brahmagiri wildlife reserve and the Kerala border. There are no manicured lawns, no resort lobby, no buffet bell. The forest does the work.
You wake up to bird calls and the smell of coffee blossoms. You eat traditional Coorg food, hot from a kitchen that knows how to cook it. You go to bed under skies that have somehow escaped the orange wash that covers most of India after dark.

🔭 Why We Set Up Here
Skies dark enough for the deep stuff
Most of southern India is now too bright at night to do real observational astronomy. Balyabane is one of the exceptions. Tucked between forest and ridge, far from town lights, it gives us skies that can hold the Milky Way's dust lanes, the Andromeda halo, and faint deep-sky targets that vanish anywhere closer to a city.
We've hosted astrophotography sessions here capturing the Milky Way in all its glory - under skies that simply aren't available elsewhere within a comfortable drive of Bangalore. If you've ever wanted to see what the night sky used to look like, this is the kind of place.

Wonders of Coorg
We offer a specially curated mix of astronomy and guided nature tours led by a professional naturalist. Our Wonders of Coorg event runs once a month, every month of the year. Astronomy is weather-dependent - but our schedule is packed enough that there's always plenty to do, even if the clouds roll in.
